Blueman was founded by entrepreneur David Azulay in the 1970s, and he continued to act as CEO of the company until he passed away in 2009. Although David admits that his fashion sense was lacking when the company began, he drew from the knowledge and creativity of his brother Simon Azulay. The two moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1967 from their native Bethlehem. In the early days, David took care of the accounting and paperwork while Simon designed the company\'s first swimsuits. The most popular of his early designs was a denim bikini. Blueman’s styles began to receive international notice because nothing like them was available at the time, and the brothers struggled to keep up with all of the new orders they were receiving. The company began in the Ipanema region of Rio de Janeiro, but with the first taste of success, David expanded its reach into Sao Paulo.
